The future for this game, what's next?

I've had the idea for this game in mind for many years. The original idea for this came from a visit to an IKEA store, I thoght it would be fun to play a game about building an IKEA store:

You start as an small carpenter, a single store, selling one type of furniture, customers will enter the store an decide if they like your furniture, then the business will grow, more types of furniture, and things will go crazy, hundreds of items, storage management, the cafe, the restaurant, paying queues, parking, etc.

At the end the game would have two main mechanics:

  • a tower defense style of game, you make the path for the customers and guide them through all your items, then when they are tired they find the restaurant to spend more money and so on
  • a creative game, you design and build your furniture, I wanted you to have a lot of freedom when creating your furniture items, it would have a scoring system to rate if your furniture is liked or not by the customers

The first part was "easy", but the problems came with the creatvity part. I always thought on a Factorio type of game, you have a factory that receive wooden logs and transform them into actual furniture. I wanted it to be physically real: you set up a machine to cut the log into planks, then cut the planks into squared planks, rotate those planks and stick them, then paint it, to finally have a finished product.

Given the different types of shapes possible I was locked, I couldn't find a way to manage this without forcing users to have an engineering degree. So this project was shelved for many years.

The one day, the idea of making it with cubes came to my mind, and from that point things went fast until this prototype was done.

And after playing the prototype I'm not sure if I should bring back the old idea of an IKEA store or go for another one, or leave it as it is now, an abstract building game. This are the options I have in mind right now to follow the development:

  • An abstract building game, similar to what is it now. Maybe I could add an online system to show your buildings, and some daily challenges to keep people engaged.
  • The furniture store. The factory is just the underground of the store, the delivery points of the factory match strategic spots in the store to show your products to the customers, you change between two different games, the factory on the underground and the store above it.
  • The post-apocalytic world. You are a robot in a world similar to the one in Wall-e, robots have been collecting all the garbage in piles of cubes, and now its your turn to turn this piles of garbage into actual buildings and other things to restore the world into a green world again and have the humans come back to live there. You produce houses, paviment for roads, machines to clean the land, something like  an hybrid between "Terra nil" and a city building game.

The abstract game:

And a post-apocalytic world test:

So its your turn, what would you like this to be in the future?
